Celebrities Get Creative With Art In A Box

Keith Lemon and Joanna Lumley. Chris Martin, Grace Slick and Suggs from Madness – what do they all have in common?

Besides all being forerunners in the UK’s sport, comedy and music industries, they are all celebrities who have contributed to the Art in a Box project.

An original concept conceived by Eazl, Art in a Box is raising money for Upbeat Music, a Camden-based charity that uses the power of music to aid those suffering from mental health issues.

The process began with each celebrity receiving a bespoke art box, engraved with their names and containing an easel, paints and three canvases. With an invitation to paint a picture inspired by the word Upbeat, each celebrity created up to three artworks, and the finished pieces were exhibited at London’s Store Street Gallery in May.

The celebrities taking part in Art in a Box are: Sir Ian Botham;Graham Coxon; Leigh Francis; Charlie Higson; Robyn Hitchcock; Joanna Lumley; Chris Martin; Grace Slick; Suggs; Jordan “Rizzle” Stephens; Bernie Taupin; Louis Vause; Paul Whitehouse and Ricky Wilson.

Alongside their careers in sport, music and entertainment, some of the participants are also visual artists, and used the opportunity to showcase their lesser-known talents.  Others like Paul Whitehouse had never painted before, but they all rose to the challenge to prove that anyone can be an artist – you just need the tools and the desire to do so.

The artworks will now be sold in a private auction on Friday 20th June, with all proceeds going towards Upbeat Music.
