Can you keep a secret? RCA's Postcard Sale is back!
Art lovers unite! This is the time of year that everyone can be a collector and appreciate contemporary art in the most curious way yet, it's the newly named Stewarts Law RCA Secret Postcard Sale. Cass Art is proud to be supporting this unique and innovative event.
This March at the RCA's Battersea building, customized postcards from anonymous artists will be included in a mammoth exhibition of 2,900 works. If that's not impressive enough, both amateur and professional artists take part, with big names such as David Bailey and Tracy Emin featured in past years, it's easier than ever to gets your hands on your very own piece of contemporary art.
We spoke to the curator Wilhelmina Bunn for an exclusive insight on how the show happens...
What is your favourite part of the exhibition process?
It has to be receiving a postbag that’s too big to fit in the office (see photo!). Most of the works arrive by Royal Mail, so it’s a great privilege opening them and holding the astonishing, labour-intensive, hilarious, messy or cryptic pieces that arrive.
How do you manage to hang thousands of postcards?
This year there are 2900 pieces and all of the organising has to be done before I get into the gallery because the hang is only for 2 days. So everything has been given a place already. Then I have a tiny army of student helpers (all sworn to keep the secret) and we hang them in numerical order.
Some postcards aren’t really postcards at all; some are miniature sculptures with cast metal, taxidermy or wax so I’ve already worked out a hanging method for those – that’s a very time-consuming process.
Have you bought one yourself - if so, who was the artist?
I’m not allowed to buy works of course because I’m the only one who knows the Secret!
Who should we look out for in the 2014 RCA Secret exhibition?
We haven’t released all of the names yet, but a couple of well-known contributors have been revealed: Maggi Hambling, Grayson Perry and Richard Long have contributed and there are others I’m not going to tell you...
Feeling inspired? You might not be able to participate in the event this year, but Cass Art stocks a range of materials for you to try! Our Cass Art watercolour postcard pad is perfect for giving it a go yourself, try with a Winsor & Newton ink for a splash of colour and a Staedtler Fineliner for detailing.
The exhibition is open to view with free admission from Thursday 13th March - Friday 21st March, 11am-6pm daily (until 9pm on 20 March) but try to be prompt as this is a very popular event! The one-day sale opens Saturday 22nd March from 8am - 6pm.
All the profits go to the RCA Fine Art Student Award Fund, which provides hardship bursaries to help ensure that the most talented artists can study at the RCA, regardless of income. With nothing to lose and so much to gain, pencil Stewarts Law RCA Secret in your diary for a fun-filled day of contemporary art.
