Past Event: Contemporary Portraiture in watercolour with Nicholas Phillips
Artist Nicholas Phillips will show you the techniques involved in creating his beautiful contemporary watercolour portrait 1415 Local pictured. Working from the original painting and photograph, you will reproduce postcard size details from the painting; the earring and the nape of the neck, learning to replicate camera lens qualities in watercolour. Nicholas will explain the preliminary stages, composition and how to recreate the blurred depth of field of a photograph. W&N Professional Watercolour and all materials will be provided by Winsor & Newton.
Nicholas prefers to work from the photographs he takes specifically for each image. Building up the colour slowly in wash and dry-brush the soft gradations and blur achieved give a sense of depth of field, a sense of the fleeting, akin to that which the camera lens can capture and the eye itself cannot. Working with the white of the paper, the purity of the Winsor & Newton colours are ideal for getting the quality of light that will illuminate the final image.
