As you tuck into your Christmas Dinner on this December 25th, whether it be the traditional turkey, goose or nut roast, or the more modern and unusal ‘Turducken’ (a chicken, inside a duck, inside a turkey) remember back to the many past generations who have all done exactly the same.
Here are a selection of paintings we’ve chosen depicting people of Christmasses past and their seasonal grub, some to be evied, some a little lonely and even one of Father Christmas himself about to tuck into his festive feast.
John Beecham – Edward II Spending Christmas at Cirencester, Gloucestershire, 1321
Robert Braithwaite Martineau - The poor Actress’s Christmas Dinner
Emma Brownlow – Foundling Girl at Christmas Dinner
Carl Larsson - Julaftonen (Christmas Eve)
Clare Atwood - Christmas Day in the London Bridge Young Men's Christian Association Canteen
Henry Kondracki – The Christmas Party
William Ewart Lockhart - Old Father Christmas
