Friday night saw the Royal College of Art in Battersea, London open its doors to artists, illustrators, students and the general public for its annual Secret Postcard event. Cass Art is a proud partner of the RCA so we headed to the event to check out the exhibition and to see if we could guess the artists behind the postcards. The contemporary Dyson building-a new location for the event- was buzzing as guests enjoyed a champagne reception and perused the meticulously placed artwork to see if they could spot a classic amidst the rows of miniature masterpieces. The gallery was filled with 2,700 original pieces of art all priced at £45.00. The mini artworks were donated by more than 1,000 artists, graduates, designers, illustrators and film-makers including Julian Opie, Sir Paul Smith, Tracey Emin, Mike Leigh, and Stone Roses guitarist John Squire to name but a few. All pieces were displayed anonymously, which is where the ‘secret’ of the event lies. After the exhibition for one day only the cards were sold to support the RCA Fine Art Student Award Fund. After buying their favourite postcard collectors were finally able to find out the artist’s identity behind their purchase. With generous contributions of new work from hundreds of leading international artists, designers and graduates, RCA Secret- now in its fifteenth year- continues to help emerging artists at a formative stage in their careers. So whether you walked away with a famous name or not, you undoubtedly brought a piece of history whilst contributing to the future.
