Artist and Royal Drawing School Tutor Sam Marshall gives us a great insight into the importance of the Foundation year - from learning new techniques and discovering which specialism you're going to take with you to the next stage. Sam has also kindly provided us with this wonderful material breakdown where she goes through all the essential products need to give you the best opportunity to explore all sorts of different techniques for the year.

SAM MARSHALL

Sam is a printmaker and painter based in London. She studied at Central St Martins School of Art, the Slade School of Fine Art and on The Drawing Year at The Prince's Drawing School (now the Royal Drawing School). Her work is shown nationally and internationally and she recently exhibited work at Art Athina in Athens and at Bankside Gallery in London. She takes her inspiration from her everyday life, animals and landscapes, often combining them all together. Sam's starting point is always drawings done from observation. She works within all forms of printmaking, but specialises in etching. She has a PGCE from the Institute of Education and teaches on the Royal Drawing School's Foundation Year and Drawing School Central, at the BRIT School and the Working Men’s College and runs art workshops at the Queen’s Gallery.
