Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2017. 16 - 26 March
Friday 17th March 9:00am
Born in Belfast, Gareth studied at Glasgow School of Art, University of Ulster and Florence Academy of Art, and now lives and works in Glasgow. Previously a drawing tutor in Con Ed at Glasgow School of Art, Gareth currently teaches at the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Strathclyde University and runs weekly life drawing classes at Cass Art.
The drawings exhibited here were all made during the sitters’ 2 hour visits to his studio and, for the most part, as practice for his involvement in Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2017.
Join us for the Private View on the 16 March from 6-8pm by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org with ‘Gareth Reid Private View’ in the title, or click the ‘book now’ button below.
Working from life, rather than photographic reference, was an essential part of the endeavour to convey the complex planar structure of the head. Considered a celebrated end in itself and not just a prelude to painting, drawing plays a central role in Gareth’s work and was his chosen medium throughout the Sky Arts competition.
Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year artists compete to produce a portrait of a celebrity from life in just 4 hours for the chance to win a £10,000 commission for a major British institution.
