EXHIBITION: DAY & NIGHT
26th Apr 2024
Day: Watercolour paintings by Zoe Johnston inspired by the natural world. Shimmering translucent flowers and delicate plants are captured in skilful layers of luminous watercolour, while animals are portrayed showing their spirit and playfulness. This is a beautiful series showcasing these painting techniques to full effect.
Night: Drawings by Helen Hitchens inspired by travel to New Orleans. While running art workshops at the nocturnal French Quarter Art Gallery in the heart of the live music area, Helen has made a series of black and white pen drawings by sketching visitors as well as the heroes of New Orleans such as Marie Laveau, voudon medicine practitioner. Modern-day landmarks such as The Tomb of The Unknown Slave are depicted.
Lifelong friends join forces! Zoe and Helen are often to be found sketching together or visiting an art gallery. They met at primary school, did their A levels together, have been flatmates, and have stayed in touch for close to 40 years as they each pursued their art in different parts of Surrey. Zoe is an accomplished self-taught artist while Helen went to The Margate School as a mid-life emerging artist. This is their first joint exhibition.
