EXHIBITION: EPHEMERAL
17th Dec 2022
‘Ephemeral’ is an exhibition created by Megan Sparkes which explores the idea of the fleeting image captured through an installation of oil paintings. The peripheral events depicted in these paintings are a dichotomy of recognisable moments and mundanities as well as the cinematic and exuberant; the intimate and the deeply impersonal; reality and fantasy.
The use of crop is a fundamental compositional element to the paintings. By using cropped film stills as source material, the narrative is intensified through reproduction. Removing the wider environment and secluding to a place of untraceable ambiguity where the derivations from the original source are not always obvious, aspects of scenes and subjects overlooked are now the focal point of our gazes.
We live in the age of the image and are saturated by visual media. These paintings are an intimate pause of a wider scene beyond our sensory perception that allows the beauty of the transient and banal to become the focus.
