Exhibition: In Colour by Ali Mechan
9th Aug 2025
Colour is the starting point for every painting in this collection. Working intuitively through layers of paint and mark-making, Ali Mechan creates abstract compositions that explore the shifting relationships between colour, tone and light. Although not conceived as landscapes, the influence of the surrounding countryside and expansive skies has become increasingly apparent within the work. Rather than resisting this, she has embraced the way these familiar places subtly emerge through the painting process. The resulting collection sits between abstraction and landscape, inviting viewers to discover their own sense of place, atmosphere and memory through colour.
Ali Mechan graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design Dundee, with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Drawing and Painting in 1993. She has exhibited in group exhibitions in London and Glasgow while continuing to develop her painting practice alongside her role as Head Teacher of a small rural primary school. Colour lies at the heart of her work. Although rooted in abstraction, her paintings have increasingly begun to reflect the landscapes and skies that surround her. Embracing this natural evolution, she continues to explore the relationship between colour, light, atmosphere and place. ali-b-3.jimdosite.com
