EXHIBITION: (IN)VISIBLE

EXHIBITION: (IN)VISIBLE

1st Mar 2025

An article in a charity newsletter invited suggestions for an alternative to the stereotypical ‘Head in Hands’ image to illustrate mental ill health. While this image is recognisable, it doesn’t say anything about real, lived experience. Mental health issues are different for everyone and are very intangible by nature. As a photographer who has struggled with their mental health, Theo wanted to take up this challenge. He created an image to illustrate his experience of anxiety and thought it would be rewarding to collaborate with others to create images describing their mental health. Theo worked with young people attending Action East Devon’s Headlight groups in Ottery St Mary, Axminster and Seaton to create images based on their experiences.

Theo Moye is a freelance photographer and short-film maker based in Exeter, Devon. This project is a departure from his usual corporate and editorial work, but represents a very personal subject. He found the process of creating an image to represent his own mental health a challenging but cathartic process. His hope with this project was that at least some of the participants would find this method of self-expression helpful in their own journeys and that viewers of the work would gain an insight into a subject which can be hard to describe. theomoye.co.uk/invisible
