Q&A (5)
Q What are the benefits to using a synthetic brush as oppose to a natural hair brush?
A

The most obvious advantage is that using a synthetic brush is kind to animals, but synthetic brushes also tend to be more durable and longer lasting than a natural hair brush. Furthermore, synthetic brushes do not expand in water and tips of brushes also stay finer for longer. This can prove helpful when applying paint for fine detailing.

Q What are the benefits of using natural hair brushes as oppose to synthetic brushes?
A

Using natural hair for the bristles of a brush as oppose to using synthetic materials is a more traditional practice. Natural hair brushes tend to carry and hold more colour than a synthetic brush.

Q My brush has misshapen over time. How can I rectify this?
A

If your brush has misshapen, you can do so by soaking in boiling water and allowing brush to reshape. Please keep in mind that if your brush is resting on its bristles, this will affect its shape so take care when soaking. Should you wish to retain the point of your brush, you can do so by dipping in gum Arabic and reshaping. Make sure you leave your brush to dry fully before using after applying gum Arabic, as the medium could potentially change the effect of the paint you are using.

Q What can I use to clean these brushes?
A

This all depends on the kind of paint used. Synthetic bristles are quite robust and can be used with lots of different cleaning materials such as turpentine or solvent based paint brush cleaners. However, avoid using acetone based cleaners on synthetic brushes as this may affect the brushes longevity.

Q Can you clean synthetic brushes by just using water or do you have to buy a proper paint brush cleaner?
A

Dear Olivia,

It all depends on the type of paint you are using for watercolour and Acrylic you can use water to clean your brushes, for oil it is recommended to wipe your brushes clean then use white spirit. we do have friendlier solutions you can use instead of white spirit. Please see links below.

6th November 2016 Reviewed by rumbidzaigore Great quality. The handles are extremely log and not very practical. The bristle however are soft and work very well with gouache.

8th July 2016 Reviewed by Morisha Moodley I got this on the sale price I think of around £6 and it is well worth what I paid for it. Particularly like the range of sizes; I'd say all medium which was just what I was looking for as I didn't want something that could achieve the tiniest details - I don't paint like that. Just lovely tbh

1st July 2016 Reviewed by Alex Lawson Very good brushes! I use the round ones most often and they are brilliant for watercolour. Larger than I was expecting so I can't do detail work with them, but useful for A4 work and above

27th December 2013 Reviewed by zuleimamorgado I used them with acrylic paint. These are very soft and the quality is better than I was expecting for the price. I am happy with this and will recommend to anyone starting painting, though professionals may consider other brands.
