This Cobra Artists Water Mixable Oil Colour gift set contains 10 tube colours and the essentials required to get started in Oil painting – with a twist.

Cobra is a new type of oil colour from Royal Talens, a range of water mixable oil colours which do not require the use of any hazardous solvents, in contrast to using conventional oil colour.

Cobra offers the same working properties and effects, just like using oil, but the colour can be diluted and cleaned with water – making for a far more convenient experience, without having to compromise in quality. 

This set contains:

  • 1 x 75ml Cobra Oil Painting medium

Q What are the benefits of painting oil as oppose to acrylic or watercolour?
A

All three types of painting offer very different experiences. Oil paints boast beautiful colour depth and blending properties and their long drying time allows the painter the flexibility to make changes over longer periods of time than when painting with acrylic or watercolour. Oil painting is one of the more traditional art practices and holds historical significance, the oldest discovered oil painting dating back as far as the 7th century.

Q What surfaces do oil paints work best on?
A

Canvas is a popular surface for painters using oil colour. You can also paint onto oil paper, wooden panels or non-absorbent materials such as metal or glass. All surfaces will need to be correctly prepared before using with oil colour to ensure the paint grips to the surface, as well as avoid any risk of the oil base of the paint seeping through the surface. You can ensure that your surface is safe to use with oil paint is by priming it beforehand with gesso.

Q Are Cobra paints heavy body?
A

These aren't heavy body but they can be thickened with mediums such as beeswax. However, this might effect their drying time and how water soluable they are.

Q How long do Cobra paints take to dry when compared to traditional oil paints?
A

Cobra oil colour has a uniform drying time, depending on the thickness of the layer, it will be dry to the touch in between 3 to 5 days, which is considerably quicker than traditional oil colours.

Basically it is proper oil painting without the turpentine/spirits etc. Best not to mix with water other than toning or underpainting, paint straight from the tube or with the mediums - only use soap/water to clean your brushes

14th November 2017 Reviewed by Robin Underwood My first experience of water soluble oil paint & thus far good. The paint is similar in consistency to Talens ‘***’ paints. More fluid than ***. Mix well with water (& with turpentine just like a normal oil colour). Mixing takes a tad longer but not an issue. Be careful not to thin the paint to a watercolour consistency without a small amount of additional medium as they lose adherence at that consistency. Good pigment load & the best range of colours I have seen in water soluble oils. Drying time is average but even when dry these paints have a slight tackiness to touch. Mix well with conventional oils when mixed with solvent. Can be applied to oil or acrylic grounds

There is a perfect range of colours in them which I will list now because I could not find such info on the site. Titanium white, permanent yellow light, permanent orange, pyrrole red,permanent red violet light, ultramarine, king's blue, permanent green light, burnt sienna, ivory black. Washing your brushes with washing up liquid after is so easy too.
