Description

Price indicates the price per canvas

The Winsor & Newton Artists’ Deep Edge Canvas is an artist-quality, acid-free, 100% cotton canvas you can use with oils (including water-mixable oils), acrylics and alkyd colour.

The canvas has a medium grain, making it very versatile, and has been pre-stretched and given two coats of primer.

The 38mm deep edge makes it ideal for hanging without a frame, and it has clean edges so you can paint around the sides.

As with all Winsor & Newton canvases, each Artists’ Deep Edge Canvas is supplied with wedges which you can tap into the corners of the frame to expand the stretcher.

We sell these in packs online or they are available individually in store.

Q&A (6)
Q Do you offer a canvas stretching service?
A

Although we do not offer a canvas stretching service online, we do sell stretcher bars and canvas material by the metre in our Islington shop. Our friendly staff will be more than happy to talk you through the process of stretching your own canvas.

Q Do you sell bigger canvases in store than those advertised online?
A

We currently sell canvases up to 48" x 60" (121.9 x 152.4cm) in some of our stores. The shop with the most range of canvas sizes is our flagship shop in Islington.

Q How deep are these canvases?
A

The Winsor & Newton Artists' Deep Edge Canvasses are 38mm deep.

Q Why use cotton over linen?
A

Choosing to use a cotton canvas over a linen one will depend on what you are painting and how you prefer to use your paint. Depending on the weight of the cotton, these canvases can be just as robust as linen. Cotton canvas have more of a tooth and will have a rougher surface than linen as a result, which may work against painters working on small detailed works. They are however, a fantastic choice for abstract painters.

Q What medium can be applied to this surface?
A

Artists’ canvas is the primary surface for painting in oils, and it is also commonly used for acrylic painting. This resistant surface makes it suited to working on for various collage and mixed media works too. It is not advised to paint watercolour onto canvas without specifically priming the surface to do so.

Q How do I prime the surface of this canvas?
A

All of our canvases come already primed and ready for painting on.

10th June 2014 Reviewed by Karen Charman I would not recommend this product for users of Acrylics unless they are quite experienced in this medium. The canvas is meant to be primed for Acrylics but has an oily film which is very hard to paint onto. The canvas needs 2 more coats of gesso which is adding to the price. Windsor and Newton should sort this as their canvas boards have the same issues.

11th November 2013 Reviewed by Angela Morris-Winmill Excellent canvas primed for immediate use. Comes individually wrapped in plastic, packed inside very thick sturdy cardboard box. Cardboard label stuck with a spot of glue to actual canvas means you need to carefully peel away. Some cardboard needs rubbing off and slight sandpapering to remove.
