Q&A (5)
Q Why use cotton over linen?
A

Choosing to use a cotton canvas over a linen one will depend on what you are painting and how you prefer to use your paint. Depending on the weight of the cotton, these canvases can be just as robust as linen. Cotton canvas have more of a tooth and will have a rougher surface than linen as a result, which may work against painters working on small detailed works. They are however, a fantastic choice for abstract painters.

Q What is the depth of this canvas?
A

These canvases measure roughly 18mm deep.

Q Do you offer a canvas stretching service?
A

Although we do not offer a canvas stretching service online, we do sell stretcher bars and canvas material by the metre in our Islington shop. Our friendly staff will be more than happy to talk you through the process of stretching your own canvas.

Q What medium can be applied to this surface?
A

Artists’ canvas is the primary surface for painting in oils, and it is also commonly used for acrylic painting. This resistant surface makes it suited to working on for various collage and mixed media works too. It is not advised to paint watercolour onto canvas without specifically priming the surface to do so.

Q How do I prime the surface of this canvas?
A

All of our canvases come already primed and ready for painting on.

14th March 2014 Reviewed by Jennifer Bloor I wanted these for some unused frames that I have, the quality is excellent and I would recommend them to anyone using oils. I don't always frame my canvases though, I like the unfinished look sometimes and don't even paint the edges as I love it to look as if it has just come straight from the easel onto the wall.
