Q&A (3)
Q Why work on wooden panel as oppose to canvas?
A

Paintings on wooden panel are easier to conserve and offer a longer lasting and more rigid surface to paint on than canvas stretched on a frame. This hardness offers superior line control and support, and colour vibrancy is stronger as the colour reflects off the surface as oppose to absorbing into the weave of the canvas.

Q What is Gessobord?
A

Gessobord is a wooden panel with a primed surface which offers a firm, archival surface for painting that will not yellow over time. This board has a slight grain, but can be sanded down should you prefer a smoother surface.

Q Would this gessobord need framing?
A

The gessobord doesn't need to be framed. The cradled ones can be directly hung onto the wall. However, it's down to your personal preference how you want to present it. All Ampersand standard size panels generally fit into pre-made frames. If you didn't want to frame your gessobord or you were framing without glass, you should always varnish it to protect it from the elements.

23rd November 2016 Reviewed by Karenmberisfordart The ONLY board I will use for creating highly detailed acrylic paintings on. These boards are good for the environment and perfect for Vege & Vegan artists as there are no animal derivatives contained in the surface application.

20th April 2016 Reviewed by Julie Westmore I like how this leaves the paint nice and smooth. I find that it absorbs the paint more than a regular canvas so I I find I have to work very quickly

12th March 2016 Reviewed by Jake Spicer I have just started using Gessoboard for oil painting and so far I'm very pleased with the results. I prefer painting on a smooth, hard surface and I've found the Gessoboard to be similar to acrylic gesso which has been sanded down. Although expensive the product has justified it's cost by the quality of its finish and the time it has saved me priming.

25th November 2014 Reviewed by Ashleigh Dueker I am always impressed by Ampersand Gessobords. They have just enough texture on them to hold the paint perfectly. I adore the wooden edging, which always gives my paintings an extra detail I otherwise wouldn't get on canvas. This is the only gessobord I use for my oil paintings going forward.
