Description

Museum Series Claybord™ from Ampersand is a unique, specially prepared working surface perfect for use with creative materials.

  • It is made using high quality artist hardboard and features Ampersand’s simply amazing kaolin clay ground formula similar which performs similar to the clay gesso grounds used during the Renaissance period.
  • The surface is sanded to an ultra-smooth, highly absorbent finish so your colour or media remains true, brilliant and stable.

Claybord is a favourite of both fine and graphic artists alike. Clayboard comes in a wide range of sizes from 12.7 x 17.8cm (5 x 7") through to 45.7 x 60.1cm (18 x 24"), in three different depths of 3mm (1/8"), 22mm (7/8") and 38mm (1.5").

Q&A (2)
Q What is Claybord?
A

Claybord is an absorbent, archival clay ground surface for use with a variety of mediums. It works beautifully with ink, paint, and dry drawing materials. It can also be used as an etching surface for printing.

Q Why work on Claybord as oppose to canvas?
A

Working on clay offers a different experience to working on canvas. Claybord offers a firmer surface to paint on than canvas stretched on a frame, and mediums that might typically stain canvas can be easily erased by simply scratching them from the surface using an etching knife or metal wool. This offers a unique way of working that is handy for adding highlight effects. Wet mediums such as ink and oil paint will dry much quicker to a matt finish on this highly absorbent surface.

23rd January 2016 Reviewed by Vivienne Hollis I am a mixed media artist using Gouache, pastels, fabrics and pencil on this product; it works a treat. I would recommend this product to anyone wanting to try out making art on a more luscious surface than canvas. I've been using Ampersand panels for a couple of months now and I love them. They're great for mixing media onto them, and the finish is beautiful.
