Q&A (7)
Q Hi there, Would you be able to tell me what colours are in this set please? Many thanks. Howard
A

The Winsor & Newton Artists’ Water Colour Lightweight Metal Box 12 x 5ml Tube Set typically contains: 5ml tubes of Winsor Lemon, Winsor Yellow, Scarlet Lake, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue, Winsor Blue (Green Shade), Viridian, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Lamp Black. Although these may vary depending on which pigments Winsor & Newton have in stock.

Q I have received a Winsor & Newton Professional set, is this different to the Artists' set?
A

Winsor & Newton have recently changed the name of their Artists watercolour to 'Professional'. There are no differences between the Winsor & Newton Professional range and the Winsor & Newton Artists' range

Q What surface do watercolours work best on?
A

You can paint watercolour onto a variety of different surfaces. However, you want to aim to use paper that weighs either 300gsm or more. For more information about what paper we sell for watercolour, click here.

Q What brush should I use to paint water colour?
A

You will need a soft and absorbent brush to paint watercolour. Sable brushes are typically used for this, however you can use a soft bristled synthetic brush as an alternative should you wish. Round brushes with short handles are the most common shaped brush used as these are an ideal shape and size for the fine detailing and small scale traditionally associated with watercolour painting. However, watercolour brushes come in various shapes and sizes, such as Flat, Filbert, Mop, Fan, Rigger, Sword Liner and Angled brushes which all offer different brush stroke styles and effects.

Q What are the benefits of using watercolour tube paint as oppose to using watercolour pans?
A

The choice to use tubes as oppose to pans is mostly down to personal preference. Watercolour tube paints offer better colour intensity than pans and are ideal for use when painting larger scale works and washes. When it comes to watercolour tube paints, a little bit of paint goes a very long way. This makes it easier to attain a higher level concentration of paint and water. They can also be easier to mix with other colours than pans.

Q What are the benefits of using watercolour pans as oppose to using watercolour tube paints?
A

The choice to use pans as oppose to tubes is mostly down to personal preference. Watercolour pans offer a quicker and easier experience when painting in watercolour, with less mess and less wasted paint than when using watercolour tube paints. The small size of the pans make them portable and easy to store which is particularly useful when painting on location.

Q What is the difference between the ‘series’?
A

Artist quality paints are priced in series numbers. These numbers are determined by the pigments used to create the paints, and depending on the how these pigments are sourced, these will differ in price. Colours of paint that are made using a pigment derived from precious stones for example will be more expensive than colours of paint that are made from an easily sourced pigment such as carbon. Only artist quality paints are priced in series numbers because they will only use ‘genuine’ single pigment, whereas beginner/student quality paints will often mix more economic pigments to create ‘hues’ of more expensive pigment in the interest of being cost effective.

25th October 2016 Reviewed by Alexander Hills Excellent value, nice robust tin with matt finish. I think W&N should consider designing some kind of tray to place over the paint tubes because once you've squeezed out the paint you need, this area becomes redundant. It would be nice to have a metal tray that fits over the top, offering more mixing space or whatever. Nevertheless, the box is really handy for carrying tube paints.

20th July 2016 Reviewed by Linda Joseph I bought this item for the tin more than the paints. I now store my most used colours in the tin and will sell the colours I don't need.

The product is very well made as you would expect from Windsor and Newton.

However, I think it's very sad that the paints are made in France and not here in the UK.

9th March 2014 Reviewed by George Spear I had read that there was a big difference between student and artist quality watercolours so I purchased these and put them to the test.
I have plenty of student colours to compare from. These watercolours are much stronger colours and when thinned down with water they offer a far greater and smother transition - there is little or no graininess.
They also seem to have more luminosity.
I recommend this box as a good way to start working with Artist quality watercolour
