In this class, students will be guided through an academic but painterly approach to portrait painting in oils. The class will feature demonstrations, group and individual tuition.

What you’ll learn about:

  • Drawing and basic facial structural anatomy (intro to Loomis method)
  • Blocking-in
  • Understanding tones/values
  • Basic colour theory
  • Edges
  • Brush techniques

Location: Cass Art Liverpool

Date & times: 10th February 2024, 11am - 4pm

Ages: 18+

Materials: 

A basic selection of oil paints, solvent, a tear off palette, a table easel, kitchen roll and a printed out reference image will be provided. You will need to bring or purchase the following materials:

Essential Materials:

  • Brushes - range of sizes and shapes natural bristle and synthetics
  • Canvas Board or Stretched Canvas - 12x10”/14x10” is a suitable size
  • 2 x jars - for solvent

Recommended Materials (non-essential):

  • Paints - at least 1 red, 1 yellow, 1 blue, 1 brown, although I will be bringing a basic selection
  • Medium/linseed oil
  • Cardboard box to transport wet painting
  • Palette
  • Reference images – if you wish to paint an image of someone in particular

All of the above can be purchased in-store on the day for a 10% discount.
