Description

Derwent XL Charcoal gives you all the versatility of a high-quality charcoal in a gorgeously tactile chunky block.

  • Each stick measures a generous 20mm x 20mm x 60mm, so they fit nicely into your hand, and the large size makes it easy to create a range of strokes.
  • Try using the long side for really strong, bold marks, or use an edge or corner for finer details.
  • They have a smooth texture, similar to that of a chalk pastel, and you can blend colours together or layer them up.

Q&A (2)
Q What is charcoal used for?
A

Charcoal is a brittle drawing media that is dense in colour and easy to smudge. This smudging technique is used to create gradients and shadows and makes for a fast and hands on approach to drawing. Charcoal is particularly good for working on quick large scale drawings.

Q Is charcoal water soluble?
A

No, charcoal will not solute in water. However you can use turpentine to solute charcoal should you wish.

1st July 2018 Reviewed by Anthony Ellis I have only given this 4 stars because I was expecting two, and only received one.

This could have been down to either only one being put in the package of stuff or a misleading description. Nevertheless their was only one. Although it is good.

21st November 2017 Reviewed by John Hargreaves Excellent product for large scale drawings. Very black and soft, so not very effective for subtle tonal work without more rendering. Makes lots of dust. Rich and creamy very rarely cracks or splinters. So much better than big pieces of charcoal, which can leave brown stains on work.
