Paper Stretching

If you want to stop your loose watercolour sheets from buckling when washes are applied many artists stretch the paper beforehand.

The most common method is to soak the watercolour paper in a tray or with a wet brush or spray bottle until the paper is evenly soaked. The paper becomes very fragile when it's wet so carefully place the sheet on a board, blot away any access water and tape it down to the surface. The most common type used is gummed paper tape.
