EXHIBITION: REMEMBER THE SMALL THINGS

EXHIBITION: REMEMBER THE SMALL THINGS

15th Jun 2024

Enjoy a collection of illustrations, paintings & screenprints exploring spontaneous urban vegetation & nature in man-made environments. Sarah Hanrahan is a full-time artist living and working in Bristol. She works under the name ‘the botanic inkwell’ using dip pen and inks, fine liner, gouache and screenprint.

Sharah is inspired by the textures and details within plants and natural forms; how nature interacts with the urban environment and acknowledging the beauty of weeds & spontaneous vegetation within our cities. Her work often studies nature against man-made materials and nature contained within glasshouses and botanic gardens.

Sarah studied spatial design, attracted by the precision of architectural drawing and after qualifying she worked in interior design for a number of years. After taking a few years out with a young family she began
working full-time as an artist in 2024. She is a member of Spike print studios and has been excited to rework new and existing illustrations into print.

Sarah prefers to work in fine detail on large pieces, enjoying the challenge and time that a large-scale piece involves. After the initial complexities of planning a large piece, she can work more intuitively with fine liner, dip pen or paint to add the forms and textures. Her larger pieces ‘Remember the small things’ and ‘Tropical pool’ took around 100 hours plus to complete. thebotanicinkwell.com
