Q&A (12)
Q Does this field box include a water container as well as the water bottle?
A

Just the bottle is included but you can use the inside of the lid and the indents on the fold out palettes mean you can mix a lot of water with your colours.

Q What colours come with this set?
A

The field box typically contains Burnt Sienna, French Ultramarine, Ivory Black, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Raw Umber, Titanium White, Winsor Blue (Green Shade), Winsor Green (Yellow Shade), Winsor Lemon, Winsor Red, Winsor Yellow, Yellow Ochre). Please note the colours in this set may vary depending on the stock at Winsor & Newton.

Q How much water does the water bottle hold?
A

The water bottle holds 35ml of water.

Q Will the water bottle leak when transporting in the box if it is full of water?
A

No. The water bottle is secured with a cap and will not leak when full.

Q I cannot see the water container in the image provided. What part is that?
A

The water container is not pictured here, and doubles as a lid that slides onto the top end of the box (nearest the logo) to keep the set secure when closed.

Q How do Winsor & Newton Professioinal/Artists’ Watercolour differ to Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolour?
A

Unlike Winsor & Newton Professional/Artists’ Watercolour, the Cotman range only includes 40 colours and are made by using hues of certain colours in order to save cost on sourcing expensive pigment. The Cotman range still have the brilliant transparency and high tinting strength, but the Professional/Artists’ range are Winsor & Newton’s highest quality watercolour.

Q Are the paints in this set Artists'/Professional quality, or from the Cotman range?
A

The paints in this set are from the Winsor & Newton Artists'/Professional range

Q What surface do watercolours work best on?
A

You can paint watercolour onto a variety of different surfaces. However, you want to aim to use paper that weighs either 300gsm or more. For more information about what paper we sell for watercolour, click here.

Q What brush should I use to paint water colour?
A

You will need a soft and absorbent brush to paint watercolour. Sable brushes are typically used for this, however you can use a soft bristled synthetic brush as an alternative should you wish. Round brushes with short handles are the most common shaped brush used as these are an ideal shape and size for the fine detailing and small scale traditionally associated with watercolour painting. However, watercolour brushes come in various shapes and sizes, such as Flat, Filbert, Mop, Fan, Rigger, Sword Liner and Angled brushes which all offer different brush stroke styles and effects.

Q What are the benefits of using watercolour tube paint as oppose to using watercolour pans?
A

The choice to use tubes as oppose to pans is mostly down to personal preference. Watercolour tube paints offer better colour intensity than pans and are ideal for use when painting larger scale works and washes. When it comes to watercolour tube paints, a little bit of paint goes a very long way. This makes it easier to attain a higher level concentration of paint and water. They can also be easier to mix with other colours than pans.

Q What are the benefits of using watercolour pans as oppose to using watercolour tube paints?
A

The choice to use pans as oppose to tubes is mostly down to personal preference. Watercolour pans offer a quicker and easier experience when painting in watercolour, with less mess and less wasted paint than when using watercolour tube paints. The small size of the pans make them portable and easy to store which is particularly useful when painting on location.

Q What is the difference between the ‘series’?
A

Artist quality paints are priced in series numbers. These numbers are determined by the pigments used to create the paints, and depending on the how these pigments are sourced, these will differ in price. Colours of paint that are made using a pigment derived from precious stones for example will be more expensive than colours of paint that are made from an easily sourced pigment such as carbon. Only artist quality paints are priced in series numbers because they will only use ‘genuine’ single pigment, whereas beginner/student quality paints will often mix more economic pigments to create ‘hues’ of more expensive pigment in the interest of being cost effective.

2nd September 2015 Reviewed by Anish Patel Great compact box, good quality plastics (feels a lot better quality than the Cotman stuff). The paints have a fantastic quality to them compared to the cheaper stuff and fairly good value too. The sponge is a bit cumbersome in the box, and I'd probably like a slightly thicker paint brush, but given the compact nature of the box, I couldn't be more pleased.

I love how compact it is and I how it slips in my pocket/handbag and yet contains even a water container and the sponge. Along with a sketchbook I can now travel around sketching without being weighed down by lots of art materials. The price was amazing too especially for the W&N Artists’ water colours.
