Q&A (8)
Q A fellow student bought 2 of these sets from your central london store for myself and another student. On opening today I am puzzled that the pans don't have the outer paper band with the colour named but just have the clear film coating. Also the colours don't all correspond with your picture. The box is marked Professional water colour, I understand they have been renamed. But I would like to ensure I have the Artists quality paints before I use them. The pans in my fellow students box did have the paper bands round them.
A

Winsor & Newton have recently re-designed all their packaging, this includes the Professional Watercolours (which I can confirm are Artist's quality paints). They have decided to now package the pans in a clear film coating rather than the printed paper bands, with the colour codes now printed on the side of the pan's white casings.

In regards to the colours not corresponding to the picture, the majority of the colours should be the same but occasionally Winsor & Newton have to substitute certain ones due to that particular pigment being currently unavailable.

Q I should like a list of the colours before purchasing this box
A

The Winsor & Newton Artists' Watercolour Lightweight Metal Box Set contains a mix of the following colours: Winsor Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Indian Yellow, Permanent Rose, Cadmium Red, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Indian Red, Winsor Violet (Dioxazine), French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Winsor Blue (Green Shade), Cerulean Blue, Winsor Green (Yellow Shade), Winsor Green (Blue Shade), Permanent Sap Green, Olive Green, Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, Payne's Gray, Ivory Black, Chinese White.

Please note that colours may vary slightly if certain pigments are not available at certain times. This may mean that some colours amy be switched for alternatives.

Q I have received a Winsor & Newton Professional set, is this different to the Artists' set?
A

Winsor & Newton have recently changed the name of their 'Artists' watercolours to 'Professional'. There are no differences between the Winsor & Newton Professional range and the Winsor & Newton Artists' range.

Q What surface do watercolours work best on?
A

You can paint watercolour onto a variety of different surfaces. However, you want to aim to use paper that weighs either 300gsm or more. For more information about what paper we sell for watercolour, click here.

Q What brush should I use to paint water colour?
A

You will need a soft and absorbent brush to paint watercolour. Sable brushes are typically used for this, however you can use a soft bristled synthetic brush as an alternative should you wish. Round brushes with short handles are the most common shaped brush used as these are an ideal shape and size for the fine detailing and small scale traditionally associated with watercolour painting. However, watercolour brushes come in various shapes and sizes, such as Flat, Filbert, Mop, Fan, Rigger, Sword Liner and Angled brushes which all offer different brush stroke styles and effects.

Q What are the benefits of using watercolour tube paint as oppose to using watercolour pans?
A

The choice to use tubes as oppose to pans is mostly down to personal preference. Watercolour tube paints offer better colour intensity than pans and are ideal for use when painting larger scale works and washes. When it comes to watercolour tube paints, a little bit of paint goes a very long way. This makes it easier to attain a higher level concentration of paint and water. They can also be easier to mix with other colours than pans.

Q What are the benefits of using watercolour pans as oppose to using watercolour tube paints?
A

The choice to use pans as oppose to tubes is mostly down to personal preference. Watercolour pans offer a quicker and easier experience when painting in watercolour, with less mess and less wasted paint than when using watercolour tube paints. The small size of the pans make them portable and easy to store which is particularly useful when painting on location.

Q What is the difference between the ‘series’?
A

Artist quality paints are priced in series numbers. These numbers are determined by the pigments used to create the paints, and depending on the how these pigments are sourced, these will differ in price. Colours of paint that are made using a pigment derived from precious stones for example will be more expensive than colours of paint that are made from an easily sourced pigment such as carbon. Only artist quality paints are priced in series numbers because they will only use ‘genuine’ single pigment, whereas beginner/student quality paints will often mix more economic pigments to create ‘hues’ of more expensive pigment in the interest of being cost effective.

Amazing difference the colour intensity is comparred to the "student" range of other tubes I was using. I wish I had started out with this set and not even bothered with student tubes. Although I now know to achieve bigger quantities of paint, artist quality tubes are more suitible.

This selection of colours is a very good range too, although if i had the choice I would have loved to have dropped the Ivory black and white for other colours.

25th February 2015 Reviewed by Jonathan Webb My first "proper" paint set so unsure what to expect.
What I didn't expect is that the pans are VERY loose in the retainers so that they can fall out of their places which is poor for a field sketch set and mine hasn't even left the kitchen yet. I spent some time gently bending the retaining clips in somewhat and this has stopped them falling out, but they still slide around which is a nuisance. There are some empty spaces for additional pans, which is good, but perhaps they could have put some blanks in there to use up the spaces.
With regard to the colours, they seem OK. I didn't know what to expect and on the whole they seem more intense than my *** colours.

6th February 2015 Reviewed by Ceri Shields I've been using these boxes professionally for 30 years. This one was bought as a gift for an enthusiastic novice friend.

At the special offer price this box is absurdly good value and it seems churlish to have any reservation about it at all. Still, if there were one it would be that some of the pigments are clearly included for their affordability rather than as ideal parts of a range that would suit most users. For instance, Prussian Blue and Indigo seem out of place in a modern outfit, whereas few of us want to be without Cobalt Blue, which isn't here. Some other inclusions and omissions are similarly beyond mere personal preference - but of course, it's perfectly easy to supplement a puchase with a few of our own choices, as one is bound to do when buying any ready-loaded paint box. Still far more cost-effective than buying an empty box and stocking it from scratch.

My friend is well satisfied with this set. Mission accomplished.

This product is excellent for a few reasons, the quality of paint is great and gives your paintings that extra "professional" touch. It also gives anyone wanting to try out the range a good selection of colours so you can find your favourites.

22nd February 2014 Reviewed by Olga Gillies Great product, especially at Cass Art price (£30-£40). These are artist's-professional quality watercolour paints (meaning they're top end, not student or basic). This box from W&N is a good starting point - it has most basic colours plus one gets the box to transport them too - win/win (as individually they would cost much more).
Unlike the photo, the paints are clear film wrapped and the colour names are printed on the side of the pans (some are abriviated). The colour chart is also enclosed. Both metal box and the colour chart are packaged in a lovely cardboard box - great as a gift. Read some place that the colours vary depending on those available at the time of production, so the following is an indication only. These are the colours I got in my box (in order of them on the colour chart, not as they were lined up in the box, plus series No): Lemon Yellow (Nickel Titanate) S4, Winsor Lemon S1, Aureolin S4, Winsor Orange S1, Winsor Red S1, Permanent Alizarin Crimson S3, Permanent Rose S3, Winsor Violet (Dioxazine) S1, French Ultramarine S1, Prussian Blue S1, Winsor Blue (Green Shade) S1, Cerulean Blue S3, Winsor Green (Blue Shade) S1, Permanent Sap Green S1, Olive Green S1, Yellow Ochre S1, Raw Sienna S1, Burnt Sienna S1, Raw Umber S1, Burnt Umber S1, Indigo S1, Payne's Gray S1, Ivory Black S1, Chinese White S1.

19th January 2014 Reviewed by ROBERT LAMPREY All artists have their own favourite colour selection and I have changed out a couple of colours, but I don't think that anyone would be disappointed with this sets range of colours.

Advertised as Artist's Watercolour the box is labelled Professional Water Colour.
The half pans are no longer wrapped in foil and paper information labels but are wrapped in cellophane with the colour and some numbers printed onto the pan itself.
This is an improvement of sorts as with the old ones I used to have to scratch the colour number onto the pan for future replacement but, the numbers now printed on the half pan bear no relationship to the Artist's Water Colour Chart on the Winsor and Newton web site as far as I can tell.

Hopefully Winsor and Newton can get the word out about the change in name from ARTIST's to PROFESSIONAL
and also amend their colour chart to explain the new numbering printed on these half pans.

By the way, they are excellent paints to use.

12th January 2014 Reviewed by Ann Froshaug i am a bit bemused that the box label calls itself 'Professional'and the listing 'Artists' Watercolour. This needs rationalising perhapse.
Lovely range of colours, metal box preferred by me to plastic(Sturdy/associations)Lovely to unpack each individual wrapped paint..tho fiddly. Encourages creativity by its beauty.

5th January 2014 Reviewed by Deborah Daniel I use this product mostly at the watercolour classes I attend. It had been recommmended by the tutor for its outstanding quality and value for money. Good for travelling light and uncluttered so I will recommend to my colleagues there and the local art club where I am chairman. It would get five stars if the colours were labelled especially for the less experienced.

And with Cass Art's special offers they become exceedingly good value.
