Over the centuries, draftsmen and artists have used a wide range of papers, board and fabrics for their art and choosing one can sometimes be a confusing business. For the last 10 years Pentagram’s Angus Hyland and Cass Art have worked together to shake up the traditional art materials retailer with a completely different approach to design. The Cass Art pad covers are winners of the ADC 91st Annual Awards Best Package Design.
What is GSM?
Paper thickness is measured in grams per square metre or gsm. This equals the weight of one square metre of the paper.
We have Heavyweight and Lightweight versions of the Cass Art Cartridge Pad. The lighter pad with 120 gsm paper is perfect with use pencils and charcoal. The heavyweight pad is 200gsm and is also great for pencils and charcoal but the heavier weight means you can even use watercolours and acrylics.
Both pads are extremely white, which is important if you want to be able to scan your finished work without it looking grey.
Our watercolour paper is cold-pressed, so it's slightly textured. It comes in a gummed pad and bound depending on how you like to work. Made from virgin wood pulp, it's acid-free and calcium carbonate-buffered to prevent colour deterioration and has high water absorbency and a hard surface that makes it easy to erase.
This Cass Art Jumbo Watercolour Gummed Pad contains 50 sheets of heavyweight 300gsm paper and, like all our own-brand items, represents outstanding value.
These postcard-sized pads contain 15 sheets of good-quality 300gsm watercolour paper, each measuring 148mm x 100mm – a handy size that's particularly suitable when you're out and about and don't want to lug a larger pad around.
The 70gsm Cass Art Marker paper is extremely smooth and bleed proof, so it's the perfect background for drawing with marker pens for graphic illustrations. This paper is designed so the ink floats or rests on top of the paper rather than getting absorbed meaning the colours come out stronger and you can use less ink to cover large areas.
Containing 75 sheets of lightweight Layout paper with a smooth surface, it's ideal for layouts but also for any pencil, pen or ink work in illustration, architectural drawing or diagrams. Thin enough for light tracing, it is very useful when rendering work while keeping an eye on your original design and popular among designers.
At 90gsm Tracing paper is useful for copying and transferring images, as well as for creating dressmaking patterns and working in card making and other paper crafts.
Our Cass Canford Paper Summer Pad, Winter Pads and Assorted Colour Pads are specially made for us by Daler-Rowney, and is exclusive to Cass Art. A high-quality acid-free paper, Canford is the one to go for if you’re looking for a mount or backing for presentations. It’s also easy to cut and fold, so works well with decorative arts, paper sculpture and modelling.
