EXHIBITION: THE OPEN: ODYSSEY AT HASTINGS CONTEMPORARY
31st May 2025
Hastings Contemporary and Sussex Contemporary have partnered on the gallery’s first Open exhibition, opening in spring 2026. This landmark collaboration will bring together emerging and established artists from across the region, celebrating the creative force of Sussex.
Each work offers a unique and personal reflection on the theme of Odyssey, journeying through time, place, imagination and experience. The exhibited works were selected from over 2,500 entries, and span painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, textiles, ceramics and sculpture.
Judge, broadcaster and environmental campaigner Chris Packham said, “Sussex’s coastlines and wild spaces are under immense pressure, yet they remain places of astonishing beauty and inspiration. I can’t wait to see how artists respond to the challenge posed by the Open. The insatiable human desire to create can cut through noise and help us confront our environmental crisis with clarity, imagination and, critically… hope.”
Hastings Contemporary is a bold, independent arts charity in the heart of Hastings Old Town. Situated on the town’s historic fishing beach, Hastings Contemporary brings inspiring art to the coastal community through an ambitious programme of exhibitions, events and partnerships. With a programme anchored in ocean futures and sustainability, Hastings Contemporary brings together artists, scientists and communities to explore new creative frontiers and the challenges of our time. As a gallery by the sea, it is reimagining what a cultural space can be – a place where art, climate and community meet.
All works will be available to purchase.
