Liminal: an exhibition by Robbie Graham.

"Drawing from my upbringing on the rural West Coast of Scotland and a recent relocation to Manchester, the works of this exhibition operate within transitional states, reflecting this period of change in my life. The paintings featured explore how our relationship with what feels familiar can change as we move to new places; both geographically and mentally. By approaching familiar landscapes as a liminal space, their meaning remains unstable and unresolved; a change from the stability they once provided in my memory. Some don’t exist at all, but are projections of dreams or how I imagine the scape of my brain to look. The terra incognita of my own mind.

A lot of these pieces focus on nostalgia; something which is commonly associated with liminal spaces in terms of internet aesthetics, while others lean more towards the exploration of our fear of the unknown, and the sense of ambiguity that can unsettle us. I think this aligns more with the emotional experience of travelling through a liminal space, which allows the paintings to function as thresholds: sites where remembered terrain becomes a means of interrogating change, loss, and adaptation."
