Description

The Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Water Colour Brush is often called the world’s finest watercolour brush, and this is no idle boast.

  • It was originally created for Queen Victoria, whose choice of a size 7 inspired the name, but there’s more to it than royal connections.
  • It’s made from the finest taper-dressed pure Kolinsky red sable hair, its nickel-plated ferrules are seamless and rustproof, its handles are perfectly balanced and polished to a sheen, and it’s assembled by hand.
  • In performance, you’ll find that the brush has just the right spring and snap-back to give you control, that the point stays in place and that its large belly gives it excellent colour-carrying capacity.
  • By any standards, royal or otherwise, the Winsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable Watercolour Brush is exceptional.

Please note only the larger sizes come in a box.

Q&A (6)
Q Which sizes come in a box?
A

The brushes in this set are sizes 00, 2, 3 and 4

Q What are the benefits to using a synthetic brush as oppose to a natural hair brush?
A

Using natural hair for the bristles of a brush as oppose to using synthetic materials is a more traditional practice. Natural hair brushes tend to carry and hold more colour than a synthetic brush. Sable hair brushes taper naturally, so when added to a brush creates a fine point. This is a quality that can advantage the application of watercolour paint and is not as easily obtained by synthetic brushes.

Q My brush has misshapen over time. How can I rectify this?
A

If your brush has misshapen, you can do so by soaking in boiling water and allowing brush to reshape. Please keep in mind that if your brush is resting on its bristles, this will affect its shape so take care when soaking. Should you wish to retain the point of your brush, you can do so by dipping in gum Arabic and reshaping. Make sure you leave your brush to dry fully before using after applying gum Arabic, as the medium could potentially change the effect of the paint you are using.

Q What can I use to clean sable brushes?
A

Sable brushes are typically used for watercolour, and can be cleaned easily with warm water. A sable brush should not be cleaned with harsh substances such as turpentine as this may cause the brush to degrade. You may be able to use a colourless and unscented PH neutral soap to clean your sable brush should you wish, although this is not necessary for cleaning watercolour paint from your brush.

Q Which are the sizes that come in a box?
A

Sizes 5 and upwards come in a box.

5th March 2015 Reviewed by Ian Beswick I use the products for paintings ng warhammer models. They are more expensive than the brushes sold by games workshop but provide the best precision and paint management. Although I use acrylic and metallic paints I need to water them down and these brushes are simply the best for watercolour. The retain the water and allow precision strokes giving the best detail for the work I am doing. I would recommend these brushes to anyone painting models or any budding artist.

6th February 2015 Reviewed by Ceri Shields We all know that W&N Series 7 are the best. I don't know quite what they're doing that their competitors aren't, but over the decades I've tried virtually all the rivals, including absurdly expensive artisan-made brushes, and Series 7 are simply the finest hands down. The best return-to-point, the most pleasing spring to the hairs, the nicest relationship of belly to length; and they stay that way the longest. And the only brushes I'd risk buying sight-unseen. What more is there to say?
