Exhibition: The Overview
27th Jun 2025
The Overview is a concept-driven contemporary exhibition of paintings inspired by the “overview effect”, a term coined by Frank White to describe the cognitive shift experienced by astronauts when viewing Earth from space. From orbit, political borders dissolve, while biomes - tundra, taiga forest, desert, and marine ecosystems - appear not as territories but as interdependent living systems, suspended beneath the fragile canopy of our atmosphere. These vistas evoke the sublime: a profound aesthetic experience that ranges from awe to terror, and a sense of vastness that can overwhelm the viewer.
Edward David Baker is a self-taught contemporary abstract artist based in London. Edward is interested in creating mosaic style and layered colour field paintings, using heavy body acrylics to maximise the intensity of colour and evoke emotional reactions in the viewer. His art explores themes of outer space (which is inspired by his work at the UK Space Agency), the natural world and non-representational form to express emotion. Edward's style has been influenced by artists like Alma Thomas, Clyfford Still, Barnett Newman and Andre Derain.
