A plain canvas can be a great inspiration for every artist. From creating fantastic acrylic paintings to stunning oil paintings, an art canvas is one of the key parts of your creative toolbox. Canvas is available in a multitude of styles for the artist to play around with, from cotton canvas to linen canvas and canvas board. It is also the most common support medium for oil painting, and has been in use since the 14th century, although the way that artists use canvas has changed dramatically over the years.
Modern techniques of painting on plain canvas take advantage of the texture of the canvas as well as the texture of the paint, whilst the Renaissance masters opted to try and erase the texture of the canvas by a careful process of painting an undercoat and then polishing the surface, before repeating the entire process until it had a glossy, enamel-like finish to it. As such, canvas is seen as one of the most highly versatile mediums for an artist to work on, with any form of media such as oil painting, acrylics, and more.
