An article in a charity newsletter invited suggestions for an alternative to the stereotypical ‘Head in Hands’ image to illustrate mental health issues. While this image is recognisable it doesn’t actually say anything about real, lived experiences. Mental health issues are different for everyone and are very intangible by their nature. As a photographer who has struggled with his mental health Theo wanted to take up this challenge. He created an image to illustrate his own experience of anxiety and thought it would be rewarding to collaborate with others to make work representing their mental health. He worked with young people in Action East Devon’s Headlight groups in to create images based on their experiences.

Theo Moye is a photographer and short-film maker based in the South West with 25 years’ professional experience. His work has been published in newspapers, magazines and books around the world. theomoye.co.uk/invisible
