Exhibition: This Is: Contemporary Patternism
4th Jul 2025
Contemporary Patternism is a term coined to define Kika's practice of observation, sensing, and making. Conceptualising her thoughts through found and collected coloured papers, cutting navigates the act of following the line from invisible to visible shapes - culminating in blind compositions which generate asymmetrical patterns. Compositions emerge through a balance of pre-determined parameters and intuitive responses, where intention and spontaneity come together. Each work begins with a limited palette and a simple self-imposed rule, allowing the cutting process to dictate the final forms.
The work aims to hold fragmentation and order at once - grief and joy simultaneously - a space where disruption and harmony coexist. Healing and grief are not destinations. They are a continuous process, to varying degrees, for all of us. Contemporary Patternism invites viewers to explore and celebrate their own inner journey through a vibrant and layered lens.
Kika Pierides is a British Cypriot Contemporary Patternist, born and based in London, UK. She has been working as a full-time practising artist since 2019. Grief brought her to collage after her father passed away in 2017. Following that thread instinctively, she picked up a kids' colour pack one day, and never looked back. From there, the practice she has coined Contemporary Patternism was born - at its core, the act of taking a shape and walking with an emotion.
Kika holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, UAL, and has developed short courses for both Central Saint Martins and The CASS, London Metropolitan University. Her work spans colourful paper collages, paintings, prints, and textiles. Kika has exhibited widely, including solo shows - A Language of Healing (The Gallery at The Playroom, 2024) and The Art of Balance (The Cyprus High Commissioner's Residence, Chelsea, 2025) - as well as Affordable Art Fair Battersea and the Fresh Art Fair at Alexandra Palace. Her work is held in private collections worldwide and has been archived by Bridgeman Images. kikapierides.com
