THE ART OF CALLIGRAPHY

THE ART OF CALLIGRAPHY

26th Dec 2023

Join us for an introduction to the art of calligraphy. Covering the basic elements of design and writing with a broad-edged/chisel pen, practise the patterns and individual strokes to form each letter. Calligraphy marker pens will be used initially and this will lead on to chisel-edged metal nibs and maybe a quill. Liquid ink and gouache paint will also be used - therefore please wear suitable clothing. Bring your favourite words to write on the day.

Workshop tutor Alison Bellringer discovered calligraphy when she was 9 years old, when she was given a paperback book on handwriting. Alison was immediately captivated by all the different lettering styles and would practise whenever she could and promised herself that one day she would accomplish what seemed impossible at such a young age. There were never any courses to attend, so she taught herself. Over many years, she experimented with different pens etc. and different writing surfaces. The choices were endless. People started to ask her to write various words. This progressed onto larger projects. Wedding-themed writing still remains one of her favourite areas to work on, but she also loves words with a historical context. A favourite commission was the Flanders Fields poem and this was gifted to the Royal British Legion. Approximately twelve years ago, she was extremely fortunate to meet with a highly respected professional Calligrapher/Illuminator and Heraldic Artist who offered her personal tutoring - this experience was awe-inspiring. Alison is lucky to be able to take words and create beauty with them. Alison loves to teach the beautiful art of calligraphy and inspire others to try their hand at it.
