Works on display will include Dean’s films of influential figures such as her major six-screen installation with Merce Cunningham in Merce Cunningham performs STILLNESS… (2008) alongside her film of Claes Oldenburg in Manhattan Mouse Museum (2011) and her film diptych of Julie Mehretu GDGDA (2011), all previously unseen in the UK, as well as Mario Merz (2002), Michael Hamburger (2007), Cy Twombly in Edwin Parker (2011), and David Hockney in Portraits (2016). Also on show for the first time in the UK will be two photographic works: GAETA, fifty photographs, (2015) taken in the studio of Cy Twombly and The Line of Fate with Leo Steinberg. Dean has also made two new films, Providence, (2017) for the exhibition, and His Picture in Little, made specifically for presentation within the Gallery’s permanent Collection.

2 FOR 1 TICKETS TO ANTHONY FRY: A RETROSPECTIVE AT THE HOLBURNE MUSEUM, BATH

See the first museum retrospective of the painter Anthony Fry (1927-2016), who enjoyed huge commercial success in Britain and America during his lifetime but has not previously been recognised by a major exhibition. Comprising works lent from prestigious private collections, the show reveals the considerable extent of his talent.

Fry was an artist who lived and worked near Bath for sixty years but who made pictures that expressed his principal inspiration of travel. His early work, dominated by dancing figures, reflects the landscape of Tuscany. From the late 1980s his painting is characterised by strong, intense colour, influenced by the landscapes and culture of India, Morocco and the Sahara Desert, and Andalucía.

Tate Liverpool presents the UK’s first comprehensive exhibition about Art et Liberté. A radical collective of artists and writers based in Cairo, their body of work forms an underrepresented yet distinct chapter in the history of surrealism. The exhibition tracks the history of the group, presenting more than 100 paintings, photographs, drawings, archival documents and film.

Alongside Surrealism in Egypt, you can visit a major exhibition exploring the work of the great British artist John Piper (1903–1992). Displaying more than 40 works, including paintings and collages, it offers a new perspective on his powerfully sensitive depictions of his native land and cityscapes.
