From The Shard in London to the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the buildings of Renzo Piano have enriched cities across the globe.
United by a characteristic sense of lightness, and an interplay between tradition and invention, function and context, they soar in the public imagination as they do in our skylines. This illuminating exhibition reveals the vision behind one of the greatest architects of our times, following his career from his Genoese heritage and his rise to acclaim alongside friend and collaborator Richard Rogers, to current projects still in the making. This is the first of the RA’s annual exhibitions dedicated to showing inspiring architecture.
Exhibition organised by the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in collaboration with Renzo Piano Building Workshop and the Fondazione Renzo Piano. Supported by ROCCO FORTE HOTELS. Supported by Turkishceramics. Lighting Partner iGuzzini. Supported by Italian Trade Agency.

10 years on from Tate Liverpool’s acclaimed exhibition of Gustav Klimt, the gallery showcases the works of his radical protégé, Egon Schiele, alongside the sublime photography of Francesca Woodman. Both artists are known for their intimate and unapologetic portraits, which look beneath the surface to capture their subjects’ emotions. Schiele’s (1890–1918) drawings are strikingly raw and direct. He had a distinctive style using quick marks and sharp lines to portray the energy of his models. Woodman used long exposures to create blurred images that captured extended moments in time. Her photographs can be surreal, humorous and at times painfully honest.
The close encounter between these two exceptional artists offers an intense viewing experience and a new perspective on their personal and powerful works.

Standing at over ten metres tall, Olaf Breuning’s Clouds compete with the towering treescape of Cass Sculpture Foundation. Held in place by rudimentary steel supports, the six cartoonish clouds are cut from polished aluminium and powder-coated in different hues of bright blue. Their whimsical bulbous shapes and blue finishes are reminiscent of a child’s rendering of the sky or the set of a primary school play. Breuning’s Clouds harness this innocence to contrast with their surrounding environment. This evocation of a naive vision of the natural world provides a poignant counterpoint to the harsh ecological realities engendered by human civilization.
